Travelling to Albania with kids?

December 6, 2024

In some cases, the local authorities in Albania require documentation upon entry into the country when traveling with children under the age of 18. Read below what applies specifically to your trip.

When traveling to Albania with children, the local authorities may request to see documentation that proves family relationships. Below we list 4 scenarios and if any of the options suit your trip, you must be able to prove the family relationship with documents in English that have been stamped by a public notary - Notarius Publicus.

If you are traveling with children and both parents are on the trip, you do not need to bring any documentation other than valid passports, as long as everyone has the same last name. If the parents have different surnames, a family certificate may be required from the Tax Agency.

If one or some of the options below are suitable for your trip, you must be able to prove the family relationship with documents in English that have been stamped by a public notary (Notarius Publicus). The Tax Agency's stamp is not enough.

If you are a swedish citizen you can order an identity card from the Swedish Tax Agency's website Skatteverkets hemsida. And you can find an approved Notary public The county board's website Länsstyrelsens hemsida for your county.

What fits into your trip?

1. If the child is traveling with only one parent:

You need a written certificate in English where the other guardian agrees to travel alone with the child (the written certificate in English must be stamped by a Notary Public). An identity card from the Tax Agency is also needed (in English).

2. If the child is traveling with a parent with sole custody:

You only need a family certificate from the Tax Agency (in English) that proves the family relationship.

3. If your child does not have the same surname as both parents:

You need an identity card and a family certificate that certifies the family relationships from the tax office.

4. If the child is traveling without parents but with other adults such as grandparents, friends or relatives:

You need a written certificate from the parent(s) where they give their consent to the trip (the written certificate in English must be stamped by a Notary Public). A certificate from the Tax Agency is also needed.

Travel safe!

The fact that you will have to show documents when you travel with children to Albania is not always obvious, but if you stand there without the requested documents, it can feel a bit awkward. This post may feel like it's a little overwhelming, but it's not that difficult. For countries other than Sweden, unfortunately, we cannot answer how to obtain an identity card and find a notary public, but use google to search for the information or contact the authorities.
